Twenty years and counting! The USS CHEYENNE submarine was commissioned on September 13, 1996 and has been the backbone of the U. S. Navy's Pacific submarine fleet since. It has the honor of being the first Navy warship to fire a Tomahawk missile at the beginning of the Gulf War in 2003. Over its 20 year history, the CHEYENNE has also received several “Battle E” awards for being the best submarine in its squadron.
Every year since it was commissioned, the CHEYENNE has sent several officers and sailors to participate in Cheyenne Frontier Days. You may have seen them at the rodeo or a night show, or you may have watched them flip pancakes at the Pancake Breakfasts. They also visit veterans in the VA Medical Center and march in the CFD parades.
A group from Cheyenne will pay their own way to travel to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to throw a Crew Barbeque on September 2, 2016. To help pay for the barbeque, we are selling commemorative Challenge Coins (pictured) for only $15.00. The cost of the coins was paid for by several civic minded individuals, which means 100% of the proceeds from the coin sales will be used to pay for the barbeque.
If you are interested in supporting this effort, please send reply to this email and we will make sure you get a coin. Or, you can get them at the Chamber office, 121 W. 15th Street, Suite 204). We can take cash or checks made payable to the Greater Cheyenne Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation. If you are interested in attending the Crew Barbeque on September 2nd, the local committee can give you some information on that as well. Please contact Jim Hastings, 307-632-4274, or jahastings@aol.com.
The CHEYENNE’s motto is “Ride the Legend!” Help us show our sailors how much Cheyenne appreciates their service aboard “The Legend.” Get your Challenge Coin today!
