You are invited to participate in an informal Wyoming Health Advocates Alliance (WYHAA) that will meet via conference call during the 2019 legislative session and throughout the year as needed to discuss health and/or disability policy. Our first conference call will take place on December 17th at 10am.
Why WYHAA?
A handful of advocates from various organizations, including the National MS Society, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the American Liver Foundation recognized the need for a health and disability-focused coalition in Wyoming. There are unique challenges when engaging in the Wyoming legislative process, such as a short general session and an alternating budget session. Additionally, many larger organizations rely on out-of-state staff to monitor Wyoming advocacy, and smaller local organizations don’t always have time or resources to dedicate to advocacy. The advocates recognized the advantage of bringing together local nonprofits and their wisdom with the resources of larger patient advocacy organizations. This will result in greater opportunity for networking across organizations in Wyoming and provide an easier avenue for organizations of all sizes to track and engage in the legislative process.
Goals of WYHAA
-provide a forum for health advocates and other interested nonprofit, government, and industry leaders to share information and resources,
-provide a way for health advocates and other interested parties to more easily track legislation and analyze its impact,
-provide an avenue for health advocates to organize a collective voice for greater reach and impact across Wyoming,
-and provide networking opportunities with other organizations across the state.
Format of WYHAA
-an introductory call in mid-December, to share organizational and legislative priorities,
-conference calls 2x a month during the legislative general session to share information about bills and actions being considered by an individual organization with legislators or regulators,
-HAA participants can send blast emails or reach out to individual participants to share information between conference calls and throughout the year.
The WYHAA will not…
-participate in a political activity such as the endorsement of political parties or candidates, -take any positions on bills. That will be up to each individual organization.
Let Jessalyn (Jessalyn.hampton@nmss.org or 303-698-5431) know if you or a representative of your organization would like to be involved and I will add you to the email list. Please save the date of December 17th at 10am for our first call. Call in information will be provided upon RSVP.
